Coral Woman Uma Mani Reminds Us We Are Never Too Old To Learn And Follow Our Passion

A woman, in her 50s, moved by the beauty of corals wanted to learn diving and observe them up close. Why? So that she could later paint them and capture their beauty on the canvas as honestly as possible. Well, you don’t have to imagine this woman because she exists, and her name is Uma Mani. Many know her as Coral Woman after Priya Thuvassery’s documentary film on Uma Mani’s fascinating journey was released in 2019. Uma is a painter, an environmentalist, a saviour of coral reefs, a teacher, and now a diver too.

Has it ever happened that you get so inspired by somebody’s art that you want to feel it come through you? For example, you see somebody playing guitar beautifully and your fingers start moving on their own? Or you come across a painting and want to go grab a brush and start painting right away? That is the kind of power art holds, it brings out the creativity in others. Just the way how nature’s art inspired Uma to capture it on her canvas.

If this has happened to you, know there is a downside to this sudden bout of inspiration too; it goes away as quickly as it comes. We start with a lot of excitement, do it for a day or two and then put it away thinking we can never be as good as others. Or that we are too old to take it up now. But don’t worry, you’re not alone in this. Everybody has to go through such dilemmas when it comes to fulfilling a desire, which is long due.

Nonetheless, with the right guidance and motivation, success becomes a cakewalk. In Uma’s case, the roadblock in her path was her inability to swim. But, driven by strong determination and willpower Uma learned to swim and dive at the age of 49. Rightly justifying the phrase - if there is a will, there is a way.

Uma Mani’s Inspiring Story

Uma had been fascinated by the artistic beauty of corals for a long time. She has been painting them on canvas to address the alarming environmental crisis - the threat to the coral reefs. Through her paintings, Uma wanted to people peek into the underwater world and discover its exquisiteness.

Strangely, even though some of her art pieces were on display at a museum in the Maldives, Uma had never experienced the beauty of corals in real. Back then, she painted beautiful corals that were very popular among divers, Uma had no idea how corals actually looked underwater. And that gave her a boost to discover the elegance of the coral reefs. For Uma, it did not matter that she was a non-swimmer and diving was not her forte. Back by strong determination, she decided that to learn diving, explore corals herself and paint them on canvas.

Uma always had a strong willpower and zeal to learn. She was a homemaker before she decided to learn painting. Uma was 49-year-old when she decided to acquire the skill of diving and today, she is a PADI certified scuba diver. Now, she goes underwater regularly, finds beautiful corals, observes them, and portrays them on canvas. Not just that, Uma has been a vocal advocate about saving the beauty of coral reefs underwater. It was this passion that persuaded Public Service Broadcast Trust to produce a documentary on her life, named Coral Woman.
